Prairie Hardy Walnuts — Zone 2B/3

Growing walnuts on the Canadian Prairies isn't something most people think is possible, but we're here to change that.

Our collection features four cold-hardy species, all grown from prairie-sourced seed with the genetics to prove it: the bold and aromatic Black Walnut, the sweet and earthy Manchurian Walnut Hybrid, and the hardy Manchurian Walnut & Butternut — one of the hardiest members of the walnut family and rarely seen this far west.

These are long game trees. Most begin producing around the ten year mark, but they reward your patience handsomely: with exceptional nuts, stunning timber value, and a presence in the landscape that outlasts nearly everything else you'll plant. All three produce juglone, a natural compound that can inhibit certain neighbouring plants, so site selection matters. Give them a sheltered, loamy spot and they'll reward you for generations.
