Athos offers a delicious balanced flavour that shines in fresh eating, baking, preserves, and freezing. Its medium-sized cherries (about 5 g) have a distinctive brown-red skin that deepens to rich burgundy at full ripeness.
What makes Athos special is its graceful, spreading growth. The branches arch outward, creating an open, easy-to-harvest form that’s as ornamental as it is productive. Ripening in early August, Athos produces heavy crops and fits beautifully into the shrub layer of your food forest or as a tall shrub, growing as the centre piece.
A proud member of the 2022 Musketeer series, Athos showcases the University of Saskatchewan’s finest work: a zone 2 hardy sour cherry that delivers both resilience and remarkable landscape appeal.
