The Beaked Hazelnut is native to Canada and the hardiest nut tree thriving in northern climates. It’s among the earliest to bloom in spring, showcasing charming small pink flowers alongside catkins.

The nuts are smaller than those of our hybrid hazelnuts but still offer a tasty and satisfying snack. Their rich, flavourful meat makes them a delightful treat. Harvest them when the husks begin to brown around mid-late August for the best quality.

This tree makes an excellent choice for enriching your food forest, orchard, or edible shelter belt with its unique beauty and resilience. It also has a narrow branching shape and a relatively low height, which makes it a good candidate to be grown in small spaces or yards.

Growers Note: Hazelnuts need to be harvested before the squirrels get to them, try checking by mid-August and harvest hazels when husks turn brown. Alternatively installing a metal fence around the bush might keep your nut stash safe as well.
