Collection: 🌰 Hazelnuts
Prairie Hardy Hazelnuts (Filberts) — Zone 2/3
Hazelnuts are one of the most rewarding mulit-stem nut shrubs you can plant on the Prairies: fast to establish, generous with their harvest, and happy in soils that would frustrate most other trees. Our collection covers all the bases: the native Beaked Hazelnut and American Hazelnut, the Saskatchewan-bred Northern Select, and the classic hybrid Hazelbert. Between the three, you get a range of nut sizes, subtle flavour profiles, and growth habits suited to everything from a tidy yard site to a sprawling food forest.
All of our hazelnuts are grown from Canadian prairie sourced seed, meaning they've already proven themselves in our climate before they ever arrive at your door. Expect your first harvest within 3 to 4 years, and plan to beat the squirrels to it as they know a good thing when they smell it.
A quick note on pollination: all three varieties are self-sterile. Only the Northern Select and the Hazelbert could cross-pollinate with one another. Planting at least two varieties is the key to a productive planting. They could be planted in the same hole if short on space.
